CAPPED Vision of Health

By Tresa VanWinkle, RN
Executive Director, CAPPED, Inc

We believe that Primary Prevention is the key to life long health.

We believe the key to good health is primary prevention . . . strengthening the physical body by reducing nutritional, environmental, psychological and spiritual stressors.

We believe that a better quality of health is available to all those who are willing to educate themselves and practice simple acts of health promotion and disease prevention.

We believe we are witnessing the dawning of a new age of health care in which primary prevention is the rule and . . .

  • Humanity is spared the pain and suffering of preventable disease.
  • Future Generations inherit a priceless gift . . . the legacy of life long health.
  • We believe in Integrative Medicine . . .

"Healing oriented medicine that views the whole person "mind, body, and spirit", including all aspects of lifestyle. Emphasizing the therapeutic relationship and making use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches to promote optimal health and healing."

Sixteen of the proclamations above hang in the CAPPED Conference Room signed by many in our community.

Examples of Integrative Medicine include modern biomedical science, chiropractic, traditional Chinese medicine, mind / body medicine, massage therapy, nutrition, Native American medicine, energy medicine and many more. The goal of Integrative Medicine is for the appropriate disciplines of medicine to work together in the best interest of their client.

CAPPED is working toward opening a CAPPED Center for Integrative Healthcare (CCIH) in their adjoining building at 905 New York Ave. The plans include 7-8 office / exam rooms on the first floor, lobby area, multi-purpose room and 6 penthouse offices on the 2nd floor. Licensed and Certified healthcare practitioners will rent spaces in the CCIH and work together on neutral ground to help their clients.

CAPPED received a generous grant from the Con Alma Health Foundation to move toward this Vision of Health. We are currently meeting each month for Center for Integrative Healthcare Luncheons. These luncheons provides an opportunity for a diverse group of healthcare providers to meet, socialize and learn about different disciplines of healthcare and the treatments and modalities each practitioner uses to help his/her patients. If you are interested in attending, please phone CAPPED and speak with Dixie or Tresa and we will get you more information.

As a registered nurse working in Otero County for the past 19 years, I have seen way too much suffering. When we are not dealing with a crisis, we need to get back to some of the simpler, gentler, less toxic methods of healing. We also need to recognize health problems earlier and help people to make the changes in their diets and lifestyle that will promote good health. This is good news - there is hope.
